Regional Differences in Older Adults Mobilities

Abstract
This study analyzed elderly mobility issues in a super-aged society using John Urry’s mobility paradigm and multilevel modeling. Elderly mobility was conceptualized beyond physical movement to include health, socioeconomic resources, information accessibility, and social networks. Data from the 2023 Survey of Korean Older Adults and Statistics Korea’s regional indicators were analyzed using multilevel models. Results showed that individual factors (age, health, income, education) and regional infrastructure significantly influenced mobility. Random effects analysis revealed significant regional variations across 17 metropolitan areas even after controlling for fixed effects, demonstrating that regional mobility levels are determined by both compositional effects from demographic characteristics and contextual effects from region-specific attributes. The findings suggest that supporting active aging requires multilevel policy interventions targeting both individual capacity building and age-friendly place-based supports.

본 연구는 노인 모빌리티의 지역적 격차와 결정요인을 분석하였다. 노인 모빌리티를 단순한 물리적 이동을 넘어 건강, 사회경제적 자원, 정보 접근성, 사회적 네트워크가 결합한 복합적 개념으로 정의하고, 이를 측정하는 통합 지수를 구성하여 활용하였다. 1수준 개인 변수에는 2023년 노인실태조사를, 2수준 지역 변수는 통계청의 2023년 지역 지표를 활용하였다. 다층모형 분석 결과, 개인 수준에서는 연령, 건강 상태, 소득, 교육 수준 등이 모빌리티에 중요한 영향을 미쳤으며 지역 수준의 상업 및 의료 인프라가 유의미한 촉진 요인으로 나타났다. 나아가 본 연구는 각 지역의 고유한 특성을 나타내는 임의 효과를 분석한 결과, 개인 및 지역의 고정된 효과를 통제한 후에도 17개 시도별로 유의미한 차이가 존재함을 확인하였다. 이를 통해 단순히 개인, 지역 수준만으로는 설명되지 않는 지역별 격차의 구체적인 양상을 확인하고 각 지역의 모빌리티 수준이 인구 특성에 따른 구성효과와 지역 고유의 특성에서 비롯되는 맥락효과에 의해 복합적으로 결정됨을 실증적으로 규명하였다. 이를 바탕으로 노인의 활동적 노화를 지원하기 위해서는 개인 역량 강화와 노인 친화적 지역 환경 조성을 위한 다층적 정책 개입이 필요함을 제언한다.
