Abstract
The development of students’ critical consciousness regarding social inequality and social justice is a key concern in social studies and geography education; however, objective measurement and analysis of this construct remain limited. In particular, research on the critical consciousness of secondary school students in Korea is scarce, for which the lack of appropriate assessment instruments is a major contributing factor. This study aims to validate the Critical Consciousness Inventory (CCI), originally develped for youth and young adults in the U.S., with Korean high school students by examining its reliability and validity. The CCI, a Guttman-type scale designed to assess developmental stages of critical consciousness, was translated into Korean and administered to a sample of 150 high school students. The responses were analyzed using the Rasch model, a form of item response theory. The results showed that the overall structure of the inventory and the fit of individual items had no significant deviations from established psychometric standards, suggesting the CCI's applicability for measuring critical consciousness in Korean high school students. However, the results indicated insufficient item separation in terms of difficulty, and some items appeared to show potential differential responses by gender. These findings underscore the need for further testing and refinement of the instrument. Based on these results, we discuss the academic significance and practical implications of using the CCI with Korean high school students.
