Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of the regional congruency of background music in geography learning videos on middle school students’ memory, interest, and perceived vividness. Regional congruency was classified into regional congruency based on linguistic information (Experiment 1) and regional congruency based on musical features (Experiment 2). In Experiment 1, the group exposed to background music with high regional congruency based on linguistic information showed significantly higher levels of interest than the no-music group. For perceived vividness, both the high- and low-congruency groups showed significantly higher levels than the no-music group, whereas no significant difference was found in memory. In Experiment 2, the group exposed to background music with high regional congruency based on musical features showed some positive trends in memory and interest, although the differences were not statistically significant. These findings indicate that the relationship between background music and the region being studied should be considered when selecting background music for geography learning videos and suggest that region-related music can be used as an instructional resource for designing effective geography learning videos.
